| This is not an old west wanted poster. It's me wearing my favorite cowboy hat. |
Howdy,
My
name is Jim Huebner.
I’m
a city slicker living in Sarasota Florida.
But
I’m a cowboy at heart.
I especially
love - -no make that - - am crazy about - - the real Old West.
I got hooked at any
early age. I vividly remember telling my mother “I wish I could be a cowboy”. At
Christmas when the other kids listened for Jingle bells. I listened for Jiggle
bob’s. Ever since I’ve read everything I could get my hands on written about
the Old West. My wife likes to call me an Old West “junkie.”
In
particular, the lawmen fascinate me. And maybe like me, you too have read lots
of books written about the real Old West. But, none of them gave you the feeling of being in
the real Old West.

Frank “Pistol Pete” Eaton. The Old West’s most
un-famous, famous lawman.
|
Well, that changed for me when I stumbled across the memoir of the Old West's most un-famous, famous lawman.
His name
was Frank Eaton. But, he was known simply as: "Pistol Pete" And he
was one of the youngest -if not the youngest -Deputy U.S. Marshal getting his
commission when he was just 17 years
old. He would go on to carve 11
notches on his guns and be one of
the most feared men of his time to
ever buckle on a gun rig.
Sadly, his name and memoir have fallen through the cracks of history and are in real danger of
vanishing forever like an unmarked grave on the prairie.
But, I'm on a mission…a mission to keep "Pistol
Pete's" name alive by bringing his fascinating----and at times
disturbing---life story to everyone who's passionate about the real Old
West.
CAUTION: This is not the Old West where a
guy wearing a mask firing silver bullets shoots the guns out of the bad guy’s hands. Or the singing cowboy with the white hat rescues
the schoolmarm. No sir! This is a real Old West gunfighter telling
his true-life story in his own words
that totally immerses you in what it was like to live - - and die - - in the real, raw, Old West.
"I have been having a good time with that book. I am realizing that what I've heard from other sources pale in compassion to Pete's life experiences."

“Pistol
Pete” Really Brought The Real Old West Alive For Me
Reading his words gave me such a living, breathing, experience of saddling up
and riding with him in the real Old West. . . I felt I needed to wash off the
trail dust.
Always a
man of straight talk, here's what he said on the very first page of his memoir:
"My friend and partner, Eva Gillhouse, wrote this book.
It's just the way I told it to her -it's all-true and
I'll back her with both guns."
"Pistol
Pete" got his nickname of when just a boy of 15 because a family
friend said he could: "Shoot the head off a snake with either hand."
And what makes his being such a dead shot really remarkable is he was born with
a crossed left eye. But, he figured out
way to hit what he was aiming at without needing to sight down the barrel.
Then, "Pistol Pete's" west really gets wild.
"The Boy Who Packed
The Truest and Fastest Guns In Indian Territory"
By the time he was 16, he'd mastered a thumbed, two-gun, high hip, cross-draw
so lightening fast he gunned down a local bad hombre despite the troublemaker
already having his Winchester:
"Leveled,
ready for business. But like a
rattler, my hand went to my hip."
"Before his gun went off there were two
forty-fives through his breast."
"He fell on his face
on the ground with
his gun under him."
From
that day forward his reputation as: "The boy who packed the truest and
fastest guns in Indian Territory" was born. And his future as a gunfighter was sealed.
"Pistol
Pete" always lived the cowboy code of never going back on his word or
backing down from a fight. And he would carry his pair of loaded Colt .45
Peacemakers right up until he died at age
97. Born in 1861, he died with his boots on
the way a real Old West gunfighter should on Easter Sunday 1958. 2008 marks the 50th year of his passing.
He often
said his best life insurance was:
"Throwin'
a lot a lead fast and straight"
Just let this sink
in for a minute what an extraordinary man this was……
·
A dead shot at 15.
·
Puts the first of 11 notches on
his guns at 16.
·
Gets his Deputy U.S. Marshall's
commission at 17.
·
Lives to be 97.
That's
darn amazing to me. Do you know of
anyone else from the old west that lived a life like this? I sure don't.
Here again in his own words are just a few of
the fascinating details in his memoir of what it took to survive as a
gunfighter in the real, raw, Old West
·
The
riveting account of his relentless tracking down and score-settling revenge on
each of the six men he witnessed murder his father in cold-blood:
He said, “What
are you doing here, and what do you want?”
“I just want you” I
said,
“Who the hell
are you anyhow? And how do you know who I am?”
“I am Frank Eaton and I ought
to know you.”
"You
killed my father.” “Fill your hand you
son-of-a-bitch."
We
both went for our guns. He landed cold dead with a forty-four clear through
him.
·
The method he used to instantly size up a dangerous opponent and
the location to gain every advantage before getting into a deadly shoot-out.
“He’s going to kill you on
sight.”
“Maybe you are
right.”
“I have a warrant
for him for murder, and I intend to serve it.”
“If he resists
arrest one of us will sling hash in hell tomorrow.”
·
His against all odds survival of "A Hell Of A Fix" when a band of renegade Cheyenne braves:
Came charging like a bunch of mad bulls,
one of ‘em shot my horse between the eyes
and was coming to get my scalp.
A fellow only has one time to die, and it looked like my
time had come.
You Too Can Saddle Up and
Ride With "Pistol Pete"
"Pistol
Pete's" one-of-a-kind life story is an important part of real Old West
history that should be saved and remembered.
So, I've spent a bunch of hours refurbishing this old book so Old West
enthusiasts like you can have the same experience I did of saddling up and
riding with “Pistol Pete.”

Here are just a
few of the priceless nuggets only found in “Pistol Pete’s” memoir because
they could only be told by someone with dusty boots who actually lived it.
·
Where to tie a horse so it won’t
get hit by a stray bullet in case there’s a gunfight.
·
When driving cattle, the best
time of day to cross water.
·
How to turn a stampeding herd
while having "The BeJesus scared out
of ya"
·
Learn: The cowboy’s call for help
and the term that once said - -
meant instant
death.
·
How to find signs of Indians.
·
What never to do around the
campfire at night in hostile Indian Territory.
·
How to follow an outlaw’s trail
at night.
“A fascinating read.”
