The Fast Draw Discussion Archive Re: Bob MundenPosted By: Howard Darby and Jan Owen Hello Mike. Munden's departure from the majority of the organized Fast Draw world happened before my start in the sport, but I've read a few articles on it so may be able to fill in a few blanks... Mr. Munden competed in Fast Draw for a number of years, but stopped competing in the early 70's. He was neither banned or kicked out, he simply chose not to compete in the contests sanctioned by the major organizations in the sport. His departure is usually suggested to have occurred after a ruling by the head officials in the sport that wouldn't allow him to use a gun with a specially modified hammer that wrapped around a good part of the left side of the gun. Mr. Munden has decided that the rules used by the vast majority of the sport are not the rules that he wants to follow, and that we all use "funny guns". On his web site he has condemned our practices and equipment. Because of these beliefs, he has proclaimed that he is the world champion and holder or 18 world records, yet has not won any of these titles against other top Fast Draw shooters. This is like me saying that I believe that all golfers should use the clubs and balls used back in the 1950's, and since Tiger Woods and the other PGA members don't use that equipment, then I must be the world champion since I do use that equipment and am the best I know. It just doesn't work that way!!! You play by the current, widely accepted rules of the game, and beat others using those rules or you don't bother to call yourself the best in the world. I know most of the top shooters in the sport, and they could pretty much all compete at the top level in Fast Draw no matter what the equipment or rules. We just play by these rules so that we can have fair and honest contests where we all follow the same guidelines. Mr. Munden wants to have it both ways. He likes to call himself the best Fast Draw shooter in the world and holder of all the records, yet he doesn't want to compete against the rest of the Fast Draw world, using the accepted rules of the sport. Regards, Howard Jim, Bob Munden isn't real slow, but the only records he holds are ones he created for himself in his own personal fast draw association. If you want to see the REAL record holders, check the WFDA records, which are also under this overall Gunfighter banner where this Fast Draw Discussion Group lives. You'll see names like Ernie Hill, who holds the Open one shot record, and a whole lot of other very fast folks like Joe Nelson, Ed Thielke, Tony Williams, Bob Mernickle, Howard Darby (who also brings us this discussion group), Linda Schmidt, and others. These are the record holders, not Bob & Becky Munden. In fact, there are a fair number of folks who AREN'T record holders who can successfully take on Bob Munden. You have to give Bob credit, though. He's managed to convince a LOT of folks that he's the fastest guy out there. Giving credit where credit is due; he's reasonably quick, he can shoot live ammo & actually hit things with it better than a lot of folks, and he is a really good self-promoter... But when you see Bob do a demonstration of how he's so much faster than all the WFDA records, you should remember that he's actually self-starting, which excludes reaction time. Reaction time is by far the largest single element of the time in fast draw. Any of us can break the record by a large margin if you remove reaction time from the mix. And if you watch his technique closely, you'll see he's already started his move before he takes his little finger off the button that starts the timer, so while the numbers certainly look fast, they're essentially meaningless.
